DSS
Brings Internet and GSM Mobiles Together in Gulf First
First public WAP service in the Gulf, powered by
info2cell, brings Dubai Summer Surprises to GSM subscribers
Dubai, UAE August 9th, 2000
Owners of WAP-enabled GSM mobile 'phones in the
UAE can now access up-to-the-minute Dubai Summer Suprises information,
thanks to a deal forged between the DSS organising committee and
Info2cell. From today, visitors to the Dubai Summer Surprises
website, www.mydss.com,
can receive DSS updates through the new Akhbar Dubai Summer Surprises
mobile information service.
The service has been made possible by the first
public implementation of the WAP (Wireless Application Protocol)
Internet-mobile technology in the Gulf.
"Here at DSS we are keen to work with new ways to
keep people up to date with the many great events and promotions
taking place across the summer in Dubai. Working with info2cell
allows us to keep in touch with people using the latest mobile technologies,"
said Najwa Al Rahma, quality improvement co-ordinator at DSS. "We
are excited by the potential of the WAP technology, not only in
terms of providing new services for people here in the UAE, but
in terms of reaching out to people all over the world."
The new mobile information service allows users of
today's advanced WAP-enabled mobile telephones to receive Dubai
Summer Surprises news bulletins, draw and competition results and
also to be notified of upcoming events. Visitors to the DSS website
(www.mydss.com ) can select from any of the three news services
depending on their areas of interest.
"This service is the first public WAP service to go
'live' in the region, and builds towards Etisalat's forthcoming
announcement of public WAP services," said Bashar Dahabra, CEO of
info2cell. "As the first WAP portal in the Middle East, we're proud
to have been able to work with DSS on delivering yet another first,
and bringing new value to visitors to the DSS website."
WAP - the Wireless Application Protocol - is the new
Internet access technology for today's advanced GSM mobile telephones.
WAP-enabled telephones allow people to access Internet-based content
and services, such as the 250-odd categories of information and
service available from Info2cell. It is anticipated that Etisalat
will provide a public WAP gateway service in the near future. However,
'early adopters' can access WAP based content by obtaining a data
connection from Etisalat for their WAP-enabled telephone, and by
logging on to a remote gateway.
An SMS-based service, intended for all mobile users,
will also be available from the Dubai Summer Surprises website soon.
