The Jordanian Telecommunications Regulatory Commission approved Info2cell's a 10-year Internet Service Provision license

AMMAN, Jordan, March 9 2000
The Jordanian Telecommunications Regulatory Commission approved Info2cell's a 10-year Internet Service Provision license on Thursday, making the Emirati based SMS provider the seventeenth ISP in the Kingdom.

Signing on behalf of the TRC was Director General Yusuf Mansour and from Info2cell's side deputy chairman, Ziyad Abu Jaber.

Noting that Info2cell's leading position in the wireless data provision market, Abu Jaber revealed that Info2cell would start offering its services here in April. To date, Info2cell has an agreement with Jordan Mobile Telephone Services, Fastlink, the Kingdom's sole cellular service provider.

From the TRC's side, Mansour said that approval of Info2cell's license comes as part of ongoing efforts by the TRC to spread communication services across the Kingdom within the framework of a competitive environment aimed at improving the level of services offered to consumers and attracting similar investments into the country.

Info2cell is expected to provide content, such as international, local reports and weather reports, as well as business, financial and technology news to cellular service and paging providers across the region. According to Al Dustour, Info2cell may even carry phone, electricity and water bills to its potential subscribers.

Note: Info2cell put down JD25,000 for an Internet Provision License, which was granted to them after review by the TRC's board of directors. Info2cell are now obliged to pay JD2,500 in annual fees to the TRC for the coming 10 years of their license's validity. The original ISP license that was issued in 1997 was amended in late last year.

The TRC was established according to the provisions of the 1995 Jordanian Telecommunication Law. Yusuf Mansour is the TRC's third director general, who took of the regulator's management earlier last year after his predecessor Yousef Abu Jamouse resigned amidst a row with Minister of Post and Telecommunications Jamal Sarayrah. Prior to his appointment as TRC director general, Mansour was an economist at the Minister of Planning and has worked closely with outgoing Minister of Planning Rima Khalaf. Mansour holds a PhD from the United States and has taught at Mutah University.
